Design of Planar Metal-Plate Monopole Antenna for Third Generation Mobile Handsets

A Novel internal triple band folded planar antenna is introduced in this paper. By modifying the geometry and implementing the shorting pins onto two sides folded structure rectangular patch antenna. The size of the folded rectangular patch antenna can be successfully reduced to volume of 34 34 7 mm. An additional microstrip line of 2 8 mm is also incorporated with the proposed patch antenna in order to achieve the impedance bandwidth of 29.7% (return loss -10dB) which is covering the DCS1800, PCS1900 and UMTS 2000, while it is mounted on a finite ground plane of 50 100mm. The typical characteristic of the proposed antenna such as impedance bandwidth and far field radiation patterns is discussed theoretically and experimentally. The simulated and measured results are indistinguishable. Besides, the theoretical analysis of the tuning effects of the geometry parameters on impedance matching is also investigated.
